Tartu, September 2023

Field observations from 1st September 2023 to 9th September 2023

We are arriving at the end of the field observations for this project. The website will be still used to communicate publications of the results, probably with a popularization booklet, so stay tuned! In the meantime, it is time to look at our subject for one last time, as they are currently feeding on grass, trees and mushrooms, expecting the winter to come.

One of their favourite food is acorn, that you can find everywhere on the banks of Emajõgi, opened by the sharp beak of C. monedula, that like to eat the pulp inside.

They can be seen in the trees, collecting the acorns, in large groups, sometimes jointly with some C. frugilegus, that feed on the ground with the acorns that the small birds have let fall.

They are dexterous, but acorns are hard, and sometimes the repeated beak hits will make them lose their grip and their precious food.
