Paris, October 2022

Field observations from 11th October 2022 to 18th October 2022

During the observations’ period, Paris was in the middle of a very abnormal heatwave, with temperatures closer than what is expected in May than October. Consequently, all the botanical garden was still in Summer.

The young crows of the year are learning how to forage by themselves in the garden.

Not all of them were successful enough, unfortunately. This one has a depigmentation condition called “leucism”, and it is probably due to malnutrition. Maybe the nest where he was born had too many chicks to be fed, or maybe he is not very talented at feeding all by himself.

This situation is possible to document because crows, in the botanical garden, are closely monitored. By the leg ring system, first, but also by GPS device.

In the Champs de Mars, the only remaining pair is still there, as noisy and healthy as possible.

Their nesting season has been successful, and between two and four younglings are now keeping them company.
